Make your own laundry liquid! It's cheaper, kinder to the environment and doesn't itch.

Have you noticed laundry liquid is problematic these days? It doesn't seem to clean as well as it used to, causes skin irritation, itching and rashes and costs a LOT. Well, you can easily make your own, at a fraction of the cost. In fact, I now make it for around $5 for 10 litres. Yes, that's true! The basic ingredients are available in the supermarket - epsom salts, washing soda, laundry soap bar and essential oils for fragrance, if you wish. Since I started making it I've noticed a few fantastic differences:

  1. It's so cheap!

  2. It doesn't irritate skin.

  3. It cleans really dirty clothes without the need for stain removal spray.

  4. Everything smells so fresh and clean!

  5. It takes about 40 minutes to make and bottle, less time than driving to the shop and back.

  6. It makes 10 litres, which lasts 2-3 months., depending on how much doggie bedding stuff needs washing!

In addition, it's kinder to the environment because it doesn't contain bleach or other nasty chemicals, although the washing soda is slightly caustic, hence the well ventilated room. So give it a try! I found a simple recipe online at gatherforager.com which I modified slightly. Here it is:

LAUNDRY LIQUID RECIPE

* Ensure the room is well ventilated.

Ingredients:

1 bar grated laundry soap (or 1 cup grated laundry soap)
1 cup washing soda
¼ cup Epsom salts
10 litres of water
Essential oils for fragrance optional

Method:

In a large pot on low-medium heat add 1 ½ litres water and the cup of grated soap. Stir until fully dissolved.
Add the washing soda and stir until dissolved.
Add Epsom salts and stir until dissolved.
Add remaining water to make up 10 litres.
Funnel into bottles. You may need to lift the funnel slightly to allow air to flow into the bottle and avoid the liquid bubbling up.
Add essential oils of your choice for fragrance.
Put your label on the bottles.
DONE!

PS Shake bottle vigorously before each use.
